Two remarkable events marked the opening of York Botanic 2020 at Gallery 152. Firstly, that there were three pieces of video art in the exhibition, NONE OF WHICH WAS SHIT! Has this ever happened in the history of art showing? Why video art is always 99% garbage is a discussion for another time, but to see three pieces in one exhibition – one of which by Kirsten Hudson won the award and for all of them to be good was I think a first in Australia, and perhaps the world.
Even more world beating was the genius move to have the exhibition opening catered by the CWA! The conservative country ladies put city openings to shame, while still maintaining loyalty to both the throne and god. I think this was the finest art exhibition catering I have ever been to, surpassing even the famous opening of Dwellingup’s Lost Eden. All the gallery had to do was throw in some free piss, and let the CWA do the rest. A huge table of cupcakes, sausage rolls, devilled eggs, scones, sandwiches, slices of many varieties and even home made mini quiches!
Well done gallery 152. Don’t change a thing.
